Summer Clubs at MAT

Summer clubs are for students that are currently in 6th-11th grade (2023-2024 school year.) The email announcing the clubs mistakenly included 5th grade.

Summer: Bowling - June 10-13

If you love bowling or want to learn, come out to Alley Cats Bowling Club. We will teach the basics of bowling to beginners, as well as some more advanced techniques for those who have been bowling for a while. Orange Bowl – 4318 US HWY 98 N, Lakeland,FL. 9:00am-1:00pm. Shoes and bowling provided for free. Bring your own food and water.

Summer: Calligraphy - June 3-6

Students will learn the basics of calligraphy, the art of stylized, or elegant handwriting with a brush and ink. During the sessions, they will learn the correct formation of Japanese and Mandarin characters, the ordering, and the proportions of the various components of the linguistic characters.

Summer: Clay Camp - June 10-13

Come get muddy with McKeel Clay Camp hosted by Miss Holder. You'll explore the artistic possibilities of the pottery wheel, slab building, sculpting, and other creative techniques. Join us for a week of creativity and fun at McKeel Clay Camp!

Summer: Crush it with Canva - June 3-7

Are you ready to be locked-in to an App that can help you create amazing graphics and boost your academic cred?  Then you need to learn from a Pro who knows how to teach you to easily whip up school presentations, party invitations, social media posts, & infographics that will build your creative portfolio to make jaws drop and eyes pop! Join Mrs. Hickman, a certified Canva Creator, to level up so you can CRUSH IT WITH CANVA!

Summer: Drawing - Week 1 (June 10-13)

Learning to Sketch will be an introductory course that allows students to discover their inner artist by learning the basic fundamentals of drawing. Basic skills of foreground, middle ground, background, horizon line, focal point, perspective, tone and texture will be learned to transform a blank piece of card stock paper into a masterpiece! This will be a keepsake for years to come! Meet at MAT ByPass from 8:00am-12:00pm.

Summer: Functional FItness

Are you ready to work on your summer bod?! McKeel’s newest summer camp opportunity is a functional fitness club centered around “CrossFit” style workouts and nutritional coaching. No experience is required to join and it is completely free for students*.  The workouts will constantly vary with no two ever being the same. You will engage in total body workouts with a mix of strength training & cardio endurance using barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells & body weight. Our club sessions will be one hour in length and be broken into a 50 minute workout and a 10 minute nutritional coaching portion at the end. We will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 pm at Restoration Fitness located at 2984 Lakeland Highlands Road. Please reach out to davinafallaw@mckeelschools.com with any questions!

Summer: Golf Camp - June 3-6

This golf camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game of golf. Campers will learn the rules and etiquette of the game while learning how to hit the variety of shots needed to play golf. We will work on driving, iron play, short game (including bunker play), and putting. Campers will be participating in numerous challenges while also playing the nine-hole course. Towards the end of the camp, they will also participate in Drive, Chip, and Putt challenge!

Summer: Hiking - June 17-20

Are you a middle or high school student who enjoys the outdoors? Tired of being inside and looking to unplug? Join us for hiking and exploring some of the nature Polk County has to offer. Bring your sense of adventure. Meet at the following locations 8:00am-12:00pm.

Monday – Lower Green Swamp Nature Preserve
Tuesday – Circle B Bar Reserve
Wednesday – Se7en Wetlands
Thursday – Gator Creek Reserve

Plan for warm weather.  You’ll need water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, closed-toe shoes, and a desire to go exploring.

Summer: McKeel Serves - June 17-20

Join your fellow Wildcats in June to make a difference in our community! Students participating in McKeel Serves will volunteer to play with dogs at a local rescue, deliver meals to senior adults, and sort clothing donations & school supplies for local foster families. Other possible service opportunities that week include visiting senior adult centers to play games & assist with memory care, and landscaping for those in need. Our club is open to high school students grades 9-12, who want to have fun, make a difference, and have the chance to earn community service hours. We will meet at various sites around Lakeland each morning at 8 AM and wrap up by 12 PM each day. Students MUST be able to have transportation to and from the locations.

Summer: Pickleball - Week 1 (June 3-6)

Pickleball is a fun and fast-paced paddle sport that is gaining popularity. It is played on a court similar to tennis with a net that is lower than a tennis net. The game is easy to learn, making it ideal for players of all ages and skill levels. The playing equipment will be provided. Bring tennis shoes, water and snacks! Meet at Kelly Rec Pickleball courts from 7:00 am-11:00 am.

Summer: Robotics - Week 1 (June 3-6)

Step into the robotics world! Attendees will build robots and learn to code through multiple hands-on challenges. Additionally, they will learn how rockets work and the basic principles of rocket flight with our week culminating in a rocket launch competition! Club meets at MAT from 8:00am-12:00pm.

Summer: Sewing - June 10-13

Want to learn? McKeel will be offering Summer Sewing, you will be amazed at how much you will learn and the things you can make in 4 days! You will have a chance to make your own pillowcase, sew some headbands or scrunchies, zipper bags that can be used for carrying makeup or art supplies, a beach/pool tote bag and maybe some summer PJ pants (if time allows). All levels of experience are welcome!  We will meet from 8-12 at MAT.
