Alan Black
Chief Strategic Officer
From founding staff member to Director of Schools, and now Chief Strategic Officer, Alan Black has played a pivotal role in shaping The Schools of McKeel Academy (TSMA)—a nationally recognized PreK–12 charter school system in Polk County, Florida. With over 36 years of K–12 educational experience, Mr. Black has devoted his career to fostering innovation and excellence in public education.
A former teacher of Physics, Chemistry, Math, and English, Mr. Black has always championed the potential of both students and educators. His early leadership as Assistant Director of Operations saw the successful implementation of McKeel’s 1:1 student iPad initiative. As Director of Schools for the past twelve years, he led TSMA through major academic, athletic, and operational expansions. Notable accomplishments include integrating art and foreign language programs at the elementary level, expanding the school’s residential zone to include more Polk County students, and increasing access to experiential learning opportunities across all campuses.
A fifth-generation Floridian and Lakeland native, Mr. Black is a proud graduate of Polk County Public Schools and Lakeland Senior High School. He earned his Psychology degree from the University of South Florida and holds a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
Mr. Black currently serves on the Board of the Florida Consortium of Charter Schools and is an alumnus of Leadership Florida: Education Class I. He has also been honored as a Teacher of the Year.
In his new role as Chief Strategic Officer, Mr. Black will continue to build upon the strong foundation he helped establish—guiding TSMA into the future with bold vision, strategic leadership, and a steadfast commitment to educational excellence.
