National Honor Society at McKeel Academy of Technology

What is NHS?

NHS IS... a national organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Many colleges, universities, and employers take NHS membership into consideration when accepting or hiring high school students.

NHS IS... a great way to get involved in service efforts both here on campus and in the greater Lakeland community, and to take on challenges to help you grow as a leader.

NHS IS NOT... for students who are willing to do little more than attend our monthly meetings.

NHS IS NOT... an "easy" way to pad your resume. Membership requires extra service hours, additional time management challenges, participation in tutoring, and NHS-sponsored events which may take place before or after school, evenings or weekends.

You are eligible for consideration if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You have completed at least one full semester as a 9th grade student.
  • You have a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • You have not reached Level 2 of the Behavior Economy System.
  • You have not had a referral for a serious breach of conduct for the current school year.

If you are eligible AND serious about becoming a productive, contributing member of NHS, then here is the information you need! Please be very careful to follow all the steps and to adhere to the VERY STRICT timelines.

  • The invitation packet will be available in the front office at 8:00 am on Monday, March 30th. All packets will be due by 2:30 pm, Friday, April 3rd. An email will be sent to all 9th - 11th grade MAT students (to your McKeel email) reminding you to pick up the packet! There will also be announcements in the afternoon, on the McKeel website, and on the Mckeel TV show.
  • You must request a recommendation from each of your MAT based high school teachers. Do not request these from teachers of dual-enrollment courses, TA classes, Study Halls, or from me if I am your teacher. Kindly request a recommendation from each of your teachers, ask them to complete the teacher recommendation form (included in the packet). Please deliver these forms to your teachers on or before Thursday April 2nd to give them enough time. Teachers are not responsible for returning any forms delivered at the last minute!
  • Monitor your email, acceptance emails will be sent by 3 pm on Monday, April 13th with details about the Induction Ceremony on Thursday, April 23rd.

I look forward to induction some amazing new NHS members on April 23rd!

Mrs. Sengsouvanna, Chapter Adviser

Hi Wildcats!  Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  This my fifth year at Mckeel and my 13th year teaching!  I am very excited to be teaching math at such an amazing school!

I am also the NHS adivsor, so I get the opportunity to work with the best and the brightest on rewarding service projects at school and within our community.

I'm a proud graduate from the University of Florida, Go Gators! When I'm not at school teaching, my husband and I are busy with our three kids! I enjoy running, yoga, and home improvement projects.

I'm looking forward to a wonderful year. Please email me with any questions or concerns, I am always here to help!
