McKeel Academy Drama Club

Purpose

The goal of the Drama Club is to give the students of McKeel Academy the opportunity to experience all aspects of theater production; both on-stage and off-stage. Drama Club members may be seen acting on stage, or moving sets behind the scenes; building sets and props, or designing make-up and costumes; running the technical aspects of sound and lighting; and even writing and directing.

Activities

The Drama Club produces two plays each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. During play production, cast and crew are required to attend rehearsals multiple times a week. When we are not focusing on performances, general club meetings will be once weekly. These meetings are open to all drama club members and are used to develop the skills necessary to be successful in the theater.

Membership

The Drama Club is open to all McKeel students. In order to become a member, students must complete a membership application and pay club dues of $10. Members are required to attend 5 meetings per year to remain in good standing.

Mr. Wasemann, Administrator

I am proud to be returning for my twentieth year at McKeel Academy. I graduated in 1999 from the University of Florida earning a degree in Zoology with a minor in Secondary Education. This year I am teaching Biology I, Biology I Honors and AP Biology.

This will be the nineteenth year that I will be sponsoring the McKeel Drama Club. Over the years, with a great cast of student actors, we have produced many memorable performances; ranging from slap-stick comedies to classic dramas; mystery dinner theaters to Shakespearean tragedies; even a few original plays written by myself. I am looking forward to another great season.

Also, I am excited to be sponsoring the McKeel Fencing Club for a twelfth year. In 2008, we introduced the sport of fencing to McKeel and began building a great recreational program. This year I hope to continue building our membership and potentially participate in regional competitions.

Outside of school I enjoy watching movies, playing video games, and spending time with my wonderful wife, my amazing twin girls, and our crazy pets.

Ms. Calzada, Administrator

Hola.  My name is Shelly Calzada. I teach both Beginning Spanish and Spanish I. This is my fourth year at MAT but I have been teaching in Polk County since 2004. I have two degrees from Florida Southern College- a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and a Master's degree in Education. I also spent three semesters abroad, studying in both Spain and Mexico. I believe that learning a language should be fun. However, the learning process often requires patience, perseverance, and a sense of humor!  I look forward to working with you this year.
